What volunteering at Maggs feels like

Volunteering at Maggs is full of moments you might not expect.

Laughter over a cup of tea.
A shared joke during a busy morning.
A quiet conversation that helps someone feel heard.

Our volunteers often tell us they leave their shifts feeling uplifted — not because everything is easy, but because they know they’ve made a real difference.

It’s not about big gestures.

It’s about small, human moments:

  • making someone feel welcome
  • being a consistent, friendly face
  • helping create a calm, respectful space

And those moments matter more than you might think.

Why volunteers matter

Volunteers are at the heart of Maggs.

For many people, you’ll be one of the first people they meet. Your presence helps create an environment where people feel safe, respected and not judged.

A smile.
A cup of tea.
A simple “hello”.

These small interactions can help someone feel human again.

And while you’re giving your time, many volunteers tell us they gain just as much in return — connection, perspective, and a sense of purpose.

Ways you can get involved

There’s no one-size-fits-all volunteer role at Maggs — and we’ll always work with you to find something that feels right for you, your time, and your strengths.

You might find yourself:

Supporting in our Day Centres

Helping create a welcoming, calm environment — from preparing food to simply being a friendly face.

Helping in our community hubs and drop-ins

Supporting people across Worcestershire through outreach locations and local hubs — helping create safe, accessible spaces in different communities.

Helping in our Clothing Project

Supporting people to access clothing with dignity, choice and respect.

Supporting wellbeing and activities

Helping with group sessions that build confidence, routine and connection.

Getting involved in events and fundraising

Perfect for flexible or occasional involvement.

Using your own skills

From admin to creative support — there are opportunities to contribute in ways that fit around your life, including more flexible or behind-the-scenes roles.

You’re supported every step of the way

You don’t need experience to volunteer with Maggs.

And you’re never expected to handle things on your own.

You’ll be supported by staff, guided through your role, and always have someone to ask if you’re unsure.

You are not expected to:

  • fix people’s problems
  • provide counselling or advice
  • manage difficult situations alone

You are part of a team — and support is always there when you need it.

Volunteering that fits around you

We know everyone’s situation is different.

Whether you’re looking for:

  • a regular weekly role
  • something more flexible
  • or a way to get your workplace involved

we’ll work with you to find the right fit.

We also welcome enquiries from businesses and teams interested in corporate volunteering opportunities.

What you might not expect (but matters)

Alongside the positive moments, volunteering can also be challenging at times.

You’ll meet people who have experienced homelessness, trauma and exclusion. Some days will feel easier than others — and that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have the right words.

What matters most is showing up with:

  • kindness
  • consistency
  • respect

Often, it’s those simple, steady actions that make the biggest difference.

Is this right for you? Volunteering at Maggs can be a really meaningful experience — but it’s important that it feels right for you.

It might be a good fit if you:

  • value dignity, respect and compassion
  • are open to learning and guidance
  • can commit consistently and communicate clearly

And it’s okay if now isn’t the right time.

We want volunteering to feel positive, supported and sustainable for everyone involved.

I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like not to have a home, no safe place to be, no creature comforts, no place to call your own.

I chose to volunteer with Maggs because they support the people who are homeless, trying to make their lives better and find them a place to live. I feel really it is the least I can do, support their efforts and support the homeless. The professional team is supportive of volunteers with a common aim of making the homeless persons life just a bit better in a short space of time.
