As temperatures rise across Worcestershire, the risks associated with hot weather become more serious, particularly for people experiencing homelessness.
While sunny weather can feel welcome to many, for those sleeping rough or without access to safe, stable accommodation, prolonged exposure to the heat can pose significant health risks. Dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are all real concerns, especially for individuals who may already be facing additional challenges around health, substance use or limited access to resources.
That’s why the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated locally in response to the current heatwave.
What SWEP Means in Hot Weather
SWEP is often associated with cold weather, but it is equally important during extreme heat. Its activation ensures that additional support is available for people who may be at risk, helping to reduce harm and keep people safe.
At Maggs, our teams are working across Worcestershire to respond to these conditions. Through outreach and our day services, we are providing practical support to those who need it most, including access to drinking water, advice on staying safe in the heat, and a welcoming place to rest and cool down.
The Importance of Community Support
Hot weather highlights how essential it is for communities to come together and look out for one another.
Across the county, many organisations and local businesses are supporting the Refill Scheme, providing free access to drinking water. Libraries, cafés, community venues and leisure centres are all opening their doors to help people stay hydrated.
We encourage anyone out and about to make use of these refill points and to spread awareness of them where possible.
How You Can Help
At times like this, small donations can have a big impact.
Our Clothing Project is currently in need of items that help people stay safe and comfortable in the heat, including:
- 💧 Bottled water
- 🧴 Sunscreen
- 🧢 Hats and caps
- 🥤 Reusable water bottles
- ☀️ Other hot weather essentials
These items are distributed directly to the people we support, ensuring those most at risk have access to the basics they need during extreme conditions.
To make donating as easy as possible, we’ve also created an Amazon Wishlist, where items can be purchased and sent straight to us. Click HERE to see the list.
Looking Out for One Another
Extreme weather (whether hot or cold) can be isolating and dangerous for people experiencing homelessness. But through collective action, compassion and awareness, we can make a real difference.
We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who continues to support Maggs, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply helping to spread the word.
Together, we can ensure no one has to face extreme weather alone
