Can you tell us a bit about Maggs’ beginning, and how it was decided a Day Centre would be opened in Worcester?
The creation of Maggs was prompted by the death of John Maggs. This inspired others to react to try to prevent a repetition on the streets of Worcester.
St Paul’s Hostel was already active in the community. Those who used St Pauls would be cared for during the night time, but daytime needs for the homeless were unmet, hence the need for a Day Centre.
What was the story behind Maggs obtaining the iconic Day Centre building?
All Saints Church on Deansway had a dedicated member called David Beauchamp, who spoke to the Dean about their redundant chapel on the same street (once St Alban’s Church), and an opportunity was offered for that chapel to be used as the Day Centre for Maggs.
“(Maggs) remains a place of sanctuary for those in need and a place of refuge for a marginalised sector of our community”
Did you think Maggs would be around for as long as it has?
(During the charity’s development), we were sure that it would be an interim facility and the homeless plight would be resolved. Now it’s apparent that the necessity for Maggs Day Centre is greater than it was 40 years ago.
National and local society has failed to solve the problem of homelessness and the end is not in sight. We were acutely aware of the need 40 years ago, but the numbers over the years of those who have been and are still in need is so very sad.
What surprises you about where Maggs is now, and how do you feel about the legacy it has created?
Our small starter team created the structure of the charity and obtained the use of the chapel building, but so many others have made the vision happen and their names deserve recognition. Maggs remains a place of sanctuary for those in need and a place of refuge for a marginalised sector of our community. I feel a sense of pride for what we created, but this contrasts with the knowledge that the needs of yesterday remain and are worsening.
What has happened over the past 40 years is an awesome tribute to the many active players dedicated to the cause. The hard work and support given by the Maggs team, whether management or volunteers, is a monument to kindness.
