On 31st August, the world marked International Overdose Awareness Day, a day to remember lives lost to overdose and break the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths.

At Maggs, this day also gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the vital work of our Harm Reduction Team: Lauren, Jenny, Debbie, and Tracey. Every day, they work on the frontline, providing practical, non-judgemental support to people who use substances, helping them stay safe, reduce risks, and take steps toward better health.

Meeting People Where They Are

Our Harm Reduction service recognizes that everyone’s circumstances are different. Some people may be looking for ways to use substances more safely, some may want to manage their use, and others may choose abstinence. Whatever the goal, our team meets people where they are, without judgement.

We know that factors such as poverty, social isolation, past trauma, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare can all increase someone’s vulnerability to drug-related harm. That’s why our team doesn’t just provide equipment or information, they build trusting relationships with people who may feel excluded from mainstream services, offering support with compassion, dignity, and understanding.

Life-Saving Work in Our Community

This year alone, our Harm Reduction team has distributed over 160 Naloxone kits across the community. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Getting it into the hands of those who need it most is one of the most powerful ways we can prevent overdose deaths and keep people alive long enough to access the help they need.

Why Awareness Matters

International Overdose Awareness Day reminds us to:

  • Raise awareness of drug overdose and its impact

  • Reduce stigma around drug-related deaths

  • Acknowledge grief felt by families and friends

  • Spread knowledge that overdose is preventable

  • Promote change in drug policies and healthcare access

At Maggs, we believe every life matters. That’s why we will continue to advocate for harm reduction, raise awareness, and push for a future where no life is lost unnecessarily to overdose.

Because with the right support, compassion, and knowledge, every overdose is preventable.
