Last night, we marked a significant moment for Maggs as we said a heartfelt thank you and farewell to Avril, who has stepped down from her role as Trustee.
Avril has been a Trustee of Maggs since October 2017, bringing with her decades of experience supporting individuals affected by homelessness, substance misuse and social exclusion.
Her connection to Maggs, however, stretches back even further — to the early days of the organisation. As a newly qualified probation officer in Worcester, Avril worked shifts at the Day Centre, supporting individuals at risk of offending due to homelessness, isolation and poverty.
Throughout her time on the Board, Avril has been a thoughtful and committed Trustee — offering both support and constructive challenge, alongside a deep understanding of the complex systems affecting the people we work with. Her contribution has helped shape the organisation’s direction and ensure it remains focused on delivering meaningful, person-centred support.
Between the end of 2023 and Spring 2024, Avril stepped into the role of Interim Chair of Trustees. During this time, she provided continuity and strong governance oversight, supporting both the Board and staff while helping to guide the organisation through an important phase of its development. Her leadership ensured that Maggs remained focused on its mission, while continuing to respond to the needs of people across Worcestershire.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution, Avril was presented with a High Sheriff Award by Ian at last night’s Board meeting — a fitting acknowledgement of her dedication, leadership and impact within the community.
Jane Kemp, our Chair of Trustees, said:
“Avril has made an exceptional contribution to Maggs over many years. Her insight, experience and unwavering commitment to the people we support have been invaluable. We are particularly grateful for the leadership she provided as Interim Chair, and for the care and integrity she has brought to the Board throughout her time with us. On behalf of all Trustees, I would like to thank Avril for everything she has given to Maggs.”
Avril’s approach has always been grounded in dignity, partnership working and a commitment to practical solutions for people experiencing homelessness. Her influence will continue to be felt not only in the strength of Maggs today, but in the lives of the individuals and communities we support.
On behalf of everyone at Maggs — staff, volunteers, Trustees and the people we support — we extend our sincere thanks to Avril for her years of service, her leadership, and her unwavering commitment to our mission.
Thank you, Avril — your impact will be felt for years to come.
