This year marks 40 years since Maggs was founded to provide a place of safety and sanctuary for people experiencing homelessness in Worcestershire.
To celebrate this milestone, we’re launching a special 40th Anniversary video series, shining a light on the people who shaped our past and those who carry our mission forward today.
🎥 The very first video in the series is now live: Watch on YouTube.
Remembering Our Beginnings
One of the voices featured is David Hallmark, who was part of the original group that established Maggs in 1985. In his interview with us earlier this year, David shared how the Centre came to be after the death of John Maggs and the recognition that daytime provision for rough sleepers was desperately needed.
“Maggs remains a place of sanctuary for those in need and a place of refuge for a marginalised sector of our community.” – David Hallmark
David reflected that, back then, many hoped the issue of homelessness could be resolved in time. Instead, the need has only grown — making Maggs’ work more vital than ever.
Voices from Today
Alongside David, this first film includes voices from across the Maggs community:
- Jane Kemp, Chair of Trustees
- Andy Price, CEO
- Helen and Sam, Trustees
- Tracey and Stef, Outreach Workers
- Rosemary and Ali, Volunteers
Each brings their own perspective — from governance and leadership to frontline support, to the volunteers who give their time and compassion. Together, they represent the heart of Maggs: a community working side by side to ensure no one is left behind.
Looking Ahead
This video is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more stories, more voices, and more reflections on 40 years of Maggs. These films remind us that while the challenges are complex, the commitment and compassion of people across Worcestershire remain steadfast.
As David said in his interview, “Maggs has always been about people — those we serve, and those who serve alongside them.”
