We are very excited to be partnering with Trafalgar Entertainment to raise funds for Maggs on the 28th of February, when their critically acclaimed production, Myra’s Story, will be coming to Malvern Theatres!
Myra’s Story is an Irish play, written by Brian Foster, that tells the unforgettable tale of a homeless woman struggling to survive on the streets of Dublin as she begs from passers-by on the famous Ha’penny Bridge. It was first shown at the Playhouse Theatre in Derry, Northern Ireland (originally titled Maire: A Woman of Derry), and went on to break box office records at Derry’s 1000-seat Millennium Forum Theatre. Forster re-wrote the play in 2009, when it was officially renamed Myra’s Story.
The show has been running for over 25 years with performances in London’s West End, as well as 4 sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Featuring renowned actor Fíonna Hewitt-Twamley in her “vivid, virtuoso performance” (WhatsOnStage) as Myra, who through her gripping performance plays a variety of larger-than-life Dublin characters. This turbulent piece explores the hilarious, tragic, and heart-wrenching events that have led Myra to this point of despair.
About the Playwright
Brian Foster began his journey as a playwright at age 39, somewhat incidentally, after growing up in an environment where trips to the theatre were scarce and creative writing was not an encouraged vocation. Foster was compelled to write Myra’s Story after seeing a homeless woman in the street and feeling guilty after being unable to help her. The character of Myra is an amalgam of several people who Foster witnessed sleeping rough in his hometown of Derry, Northern Ireland.
Some of Foster’s other works include ‘A Miracle in Ballymore’, ‘From the Camp to the Creggan’, and ‘The Butterfly of Killybeggs’.
Foster retired from writing in 2022.
