About Maggs

Who we are

Maggs is a county-wide charity supporting people experiencing homelessness and multiple disadvantage across Worcestershire.

Through our day centres, outreach, and specialist services, we provide practical support, build trusted relationships, and support people to move towards stability and independence.

Our approach is trauma-informed, person-centred, and rooted in understanding the complex realities people face.

About Maggs

Our story

Maggs is named in memory of John Cecil Maggs, a man who experienced homelessness on the streets of Worcester in the 1970s and early 1980s.

After a difficult early life, including the loss of his mother at a young age, John struggled with his mental health and alcohol use. In 1974, he became homeless and spent years sleeping rough in Worcester, often facing abuse and isolation. Despite this, those who knew him remembered him as a kind and decent man.

In July 1984, John was found dead in the basement of a derelict building where he had been sheltering. He was just 44 years old.

His death became a turning point.

It highlighted the urgent need for better support for people experiencing homelessness — and helped to bring together local organisations, services, and volunteers determined to make a difference.

About Maggs

From then ...to now

What began as a small, volunteer-led initiative has grown into a county-wide organisation supporting people across Worcestershire.

Over the years, Maggs has:

  • Expanded beyond a single site
  • Developed outreach and specialist services
  • Built strong partnerships across health, housing, and community sectors
  • Continued to adapt in response to changing need

Today, Maggs provides the kind of support that was not available to John — helping to ensure fewer people are left without help, dignity, or hope. His name has created a legacy and a promise to others that they shouldn’t share the same fate.
